More Scrap Busting

Inspired by Carolyn's hexies I started some 9.5" squares with 1.5" hexies. I am attempting to coordinate them with the garden rabbit fabric cut from the edges of the Circle Game quilt. The backgrounds are left over from a dress I made a few years ago, and from a dress I cut out back in summer but didn't sew up.

I started using Weetbix box homemade hexies, then I read about the washaway fusible pieces so I have used them. Saves the glue basting, sewing through cardboard and then removing the pieces. Hopefully, they all wash away in the end!

I am also being a bit lazy and not sewing the inner hexie. I plan to straightish line machine quilt the finished project right over the hexies.

Scraps Busted

Our first challenge of the year in our Monday Modern Quilt Group was a Scrap Busting one. Being a very relaxed group, there are no rules as such - just the expectation that we use scraps to make our quilts.

As I said in an earlier post, I don't think I have that many scraps - just one box about 20 x 20 x 20cm. However, when I was home at my Mum and Dad's I did remember two more boxes of scraps that I have taken home for when Lucy-the-niece wants to do some sewing. Ooops.

Anyway, my quilt is done.

Most of the scraps came from the FWSQ quilt I made for my cousin. The dark grey I bought for another project and have not used it ... so while not a scrap, certainly off the shelf. I pieced the back from more pieces off the shelf. I left the selvedge on some, because I like them! And the striped fabric was left over binding from another quilt.

I think this quilt turned out better than I thought it would. I actually quite like it.

Scrap Busting - Part 3

I started by quilting 2 inch straight-ish lines following my hera marker marks. Despite these lines, I still managed to go a bit crooked. I decided to embrace that and added a one inch line in between every second set of two inch lines. I free handed that line of quilting. I used thread off the shelf to go with the whole scrap busting idea.

Scrap Busting - Part 1

I don't think I have a lot of scraps. I have one container that measures about 25 x 25 x 25cm. I don't keep tiny pieces and often take medium and larger pieces with me in the holidays in case Lucy-the-niece wants to do some sewing. Anyway, turns out the scrap container was quite densely packed!

I grouped my fabrics and deliberately left out blue!

The pink plaid above is the bag my new sheets came in. Love the sheets!

And when I ran out of colour, I used some leftover binding for a few blocks with some charcoal left over from an unfinished project a few years ago!

During this process I learnt that washi tape does indeed remove paint from walls. Oops!
