Geese for Modern Monday

Our Modern Monday block lotto this month is a flock of geese in sort of aqua-green-blue.

It's a paper-pieced pattern. I don't think I have done any paper-piecing since last year. And I didn't enjoy this pattern at all! I think it looks nice, but this is version #2 because the first one had hideously mis-matched points all over the show so it went in the bin. And in places this one is just over 12.25" rather than 12.5" - which I know will work out in the seam allowance - but it was a fiddly pain all the same and not a block I will ever sew again.

Churning and Dashing

According to the internet, the Churn and Dash block is so named because the pattern resembles a butter churn and stick (dash) - just like on Little House on the Prairie!

Anyway, our Monday Modern block 'lotto' for October is aqua and red churn and dash. They are very economical to make - 4 1/2 inches across the width of two fabrics.

 

Economical to make, but difficult to photograph! The first picture shows the more accurate colour.

Monday Modern's May Mission

Really, it's a challenge but that would ruin the alliteration I had going on!

Robyn won last months blocks and set us a 'Swamp Block' challenge. I made one and then thought, why not another. They are pretty quick to whip up.

My first one is pretty bright, so I tried to darken things down in the second block. Using a "light neutral" in the corners, rather than white, made me think twice about my centre squares. Everything came out of the stash. I like blocks like that!

And I have made a start on my next Circle Game block.

Orange

I have been machine sewing this weekend. Firstly, I have started making orange x blocks. At the moment they measure, randomly, 3 6/8". I might trim them back further so there is less natural showing and they look more orange.

I have a lot more orange ones to make, and a few black and beige ones. You can see what happens when you cut the orange strips too short in the centre block. Ooops.

Our Monday Modern Block Lotto this month is simply a colour slab with a white square near the centre. Since I had the oranges off the shelf and unfolded, I went with orange. You can see the yellow, blue, teal and purple slabs in our flickr pool.

Now it's back to the hand sewing and blocks 7 and 8 [April] of The Circle Game.
