Finishes

It's been a while. In fact, so long, I have two quilts finished.

Firstly, the proverbial quilt featuring the lyrics from one of my favourite The [Dixie] Chicks songs. Coincidentally, the words kind of go with the big lockdown of 2020 when I put this one together.

Being shot cotton and hand quilted with a wool batting, it is super soft. While I remember, this quilt contains little bits of 'other' blue gingham, as seen in the G above, given to me by my Gran's cousin. She passed away in March 2020.

Even more recently, like this weekend, I have also finished my other big make started in February last year - the Free Wheeling Single Girl quilt.

It's a big one. About two metres x two metres. Again it is hand quilted with a wool batting. I splashed out on a wide backing for the first time. It weighs a tonne. This one is destined for my cousin. The first on my Mum's side to turn 50.

I like both of these quilts very much.

Finished. Riding Mountain Quilt.

Without a doubt, one of the top two parts of quilt making for me is the hand quilting. So I have tended towards quilts with bigger pieces over the last year or so.

Here is the finished Riding Mountain quilt. It measures about 152 x 152 cm. As usual, I have used wool batting. You can't beat wool batting and hand quilting - the drape.

The Gold Fold Quilt is Done

I started this quilt back in June before my sewing room (spare bedroom) became the pantry and storage room for four months during the house fix last year. As I said in my first blog post about this quilt, I was inspired by Margreth's quilt for Texas. So after a mere 7 months - which must be some kind of record for me - it's finished. And here are 14 photos to show it off -

It measures about 180 x 206cm. It's 3 cm longer on one side than the other. Oops. It's hand quilted with #8 Eleganza thread and backed with a 2013 Denyse Schmidt off the shelf. I bought maybe four fabrics to complete this quilt as I didn't have any white and blues, and everything else is off the shelf. I do like this quilt.

Finished

I found the perfect binding amongst my stash. It's brown with orange, pink and green.

The sun has been out today - for a change - so gumboots on and across to the neighbour's wall.

Once again, I didn't want to buy any more fabric, so used bits off the shelf to piece the back.

It's lovely and soft with the wool batting and hand quilting.

This week's progress photo is of the cleared out dining room and kitchen. The builders are moving inside this week. The sewing room is now a sewing room and pantry combo with the dryer in the corner. The spare room is now a room holding everything else that used to be in the kitchen and dining room. The hall is holding the piano and microwave. They better move quickly!

... Aunt Bet's Quilt #2 finished.

I finished this one in the weekend. It was such a nice autumn day yesterday when I was home as part of the nationwide teacher strike, I took the opportunity to take some pictures.

I started with the light binding and then decided it looked better with navy, so continued with some navy fabrics. I think the navy fabric holds it together better.

I didn't want to buy any more fabric, so pieced the back from fabric in the stash.

Now to start quilting the first Aunt Bet's quilt! It's a maroon and brown combo.

And just so I can track and manage the process, the builders started on the house this week. The previous owners (15 + yrs ago) converted the carport into a room with the big window at the front. It's been leaking for years both through the roof and in two of the corners. I had an architect do plans and get consent last year. The quoting process started in January this year. I am taking the opportunity to re-roof the house getting rid of the 1960's decramastic tiles as every room has water damage on the ceilings. It's a 12 week job. We will see.
