This quilt was finished a week or so ago, but it has been raining since then. Apparently. not enough rain to get the Auckland dams to their usual levels so we are still on water restrictions. I am convinced the council needs to a put a dam in my back yard as it rains all the time here! However, I took advantage of a break in the weather this morning a) to put the washing outside to dry and b) to take the finished photos of the Kilim Quilt on the neighbour's wall as per.
The main part of the backing was purchased on Trade Me. It is a textured cotton - maybe a barkcloth. The colours are just right. Most of the rest of the fabrics were left over from my Free Wheeling Single Girl quilt - which is next in the queue for quilting. Others came off the shelf. I was deliberate in using the yellow and orange binding as I didn't want orange binding on the orange backing.
And for a finishing touch, I added some orange stitching to my label. The quilt is quilted with a Sue Spargo variegated Eleganza thread. Her threads are my favourite for their texture.
Now for some inside shots -

Kilim Quilt Progress
Now the woolly mammoth is out of the way, I can return to the kilim quilt. It's about 2/3 of the way done.
I like this kind of quilting when I have several needles on the go at once. It looks like a bit of a rat's nest at times, but it works out in the end.

Day 46 | More Kilim Quilting
The weather yesterday was the best of the whole week. But as usual, it was windy.
And after running out of thread and shops still out of bounds, I stopped work on the woolly mammoth and started on the kilim quilt. Thinking it will be a pretty quick job. I am using Sue Spargo Eleganza (my fave) variegated EZM29 aka Fireworks! It's a perfect match, and I do love variegated thread.
Sounds like the country will go to Level 2 tomorrow. So in a week's time I will be back at work fulltime. It also sounds like that school will be business as usual except with better cleaning. There are more 'rules' in restaurants, etc than there will be in schools.
On the running front, I have come to conclude that I can't run every day as my knee can't handle it. I got back to 7km on Thursday last week, and I would like to get 3 x 7km this week to finish on a high. This week will be my last week of early morning running. Work.

Days 37, 38 and 39 | The Kilim Quilt
Days 4 - 6 of at least two weeks of Level 3.
My days at school follow the pattern of run, school, rest/waste time.

I got my run up to 7km on Friday morning. I so thought I was on my last k when my watched clicked over and it was only 6, so I had to push on. Looking at my stats, my pace hasn’t changed much at all. It takes me about 6:25 to run a km. My first km is always the slowest. I think it’s the most up hill, and not a big hill to the eye, but just a consistent slope really. I enjoy the second km on the flat. The third to fourth km is always the hardest. To avoid aggravating my knee, I run back down my road on the diagonal which must look weird. Fortunately, there are still very few cars on my road and even fewer people about at that time. In the five weeks since I started running I have doubled my distance. And last week I added a km between Mon and Fri. I reckon, I could go further but would just like to be able to get all way up the hill to get home. That might add just another 200m. Sometimes I think I will keep this running happening when the gym re-opens - just on a Sunday morning. I certainly won’t have 9am starts once we are back full time, so won’t be running in the morning. I will be interested to see how running has affected my gym fitness. I bet I have lost a bit of core and arm muscle strength.
Being back at work has brought my daily sewing to a halt. Fair enough. I am being paid to do my actual job. However, this weekend I have completed the kilim quilt top.
I really like the pink and yellow combos in my free wheeling single girl quilt, so used the leftovers from there for this. I made the throw size ... I think it’s more like a good baby size as it won’t throw over much adult size.
It was pretty easy to put together. I did find I had to get down to 1/8th inch seam allowance to preserve any points on my triangles though. I didn’t pay enough attention to that yesterday so have lots of unpointy triangles which is disappointing.
I do think this will hand quilt up nicely, which influenced me to buy the pattern. It will have to join the queue though as I haven’t touched the woolly mammoth all week, have the proverbial quilt basted and need to get the free wheeling single girl quilted by early January.

Day 32 | Why not?
Yes, I have three quilts waiting to be quilted, but why not start something new.
Walk, sewing, reading, video chat with Lucy the niece who taught me how to photograph our screen when we had our filters in place 😉
