Made from the Heart

This term my i-extend group (Yr 10 - 12 Wednesday afternoons) is called Made from the Heart. Stole the title from an item in my local patchwork shop's newsletter. The girls (the one boy on the roll did not show) are making baby-sized wonky log cabin quilts for Middlemore Hospital's Intensive Care Unit.

Because it's Week 3 already and we are only together for one 50 min class once a week, they are working in pairs. Each pair needs to make six 7.5" blocks which they'll put together with white sashing.

They were super into it today and were surprised at how easy it was ... once they got to grips with 'right sides together' also known as 'good side to good side'.

  1. It's so great that you get to do 'craft' with your students. In this busy busy instant satisfaction world not many young people get to learn the pleasure you get from making things with your own hands.

    1. I enjoy being able to work outside my day to day learning area.

  2. Can I come learn how to make wonky log cabin quilts too? I only had a few learners turn up yesterday, perhaps if they turn up next week they can sit in the back of the room while I learn from you :)

    1. Do it! They are only called "wonky" because we don't have rotary cutters or cutting mats, just terrible scissors!
