I Started a New Quilt
This one will be small. Just four 18 inch blocks. A baby quilt for a colleague. I hope it's not too serious for a baby quilt.
So far I have made three blocks -
As you can see, some sections of the rings line up better than others!
The pattern is called Ring Around and is in Kathy Doughty's Mixing Quilt Elements: A Modern Look at Colour, Style and Design. It is made using a wedge ruler and the sections of the rings are appliqued onto the backgrounds.
I was stumped for something original. Instagram is full of 'pretty' in style and colour quilts full of squares and triangles, or EPP. I guess one of the downsides of social media is the jumping on the bandwagon and FOMO which means people follow the trends to be one of the cool kids.
So far all of the fabric has come off the shelf, but I am out of 'dirty' blues for the backgrounds, so will add that to my shopping list when I go looking for a good quality and nice feeling blue solid. Maybe I will do that tomorrow. The joy of being on holiday.

My Hawaiian Modern Wedge
I am going to call this one my Hawaiian Modern Wedge because the green fabric came from Hawaii in 2013.
Vera Bradley has a shop in the Ala Moana Centre and we visited it several times to look at the nice bags. I don't think any of us bought a bag but I did buy this serviette, or napkin if you are American or posh, which I always knew would get cut up and used in a quilt.
The bee fabric has photographed a bit red. In real life, it's a nice dark magenta. And it's not spots or blue. Win.
I think I will make three - four more 'flowers' and then start to plan the background. I like the idea of a big quilt to go with these big, bright flowers.

Blue and Green Modern Wedges
Oh yeah, the addiction continues.
While these flowers are very blue and green (aka same old, same old), I am planning vibrant centres of pink, red and aqua!

More Modern Wedges
I made sure I got the groceries bought and the school work done this morning, so this afternoon was free for making more modern wedges. I think I might be addicted!
And look - no spots!

Class with Kathy
I attended a Modern Wedge workshop with Kathy Doughty, of Material Obsession fame, at All Things Patchwork today. It's the first class with a 'famous' quilt maker I have attended and it was a good one to start with. It was a really informative, stress free and fun day.
I chose to begin Garden Party from Kathy's book - Making Quilts. We learnt about contrast during the first part of the morning so kept that in mind when choosing fabrics from the stacks we brought with us. It was great to have Kathy's guidance choosing fabrics, as I always default to same old, same old blue and green.
During the day I got three big flowers and one small flower made. I like them all lots. If I was forced to pic a fave it would be the pink and green one in the third photo.
At the moment I have a bit of a spot thing going on. I do love spots. However, in my next six fabric pairings only one involves spots.
If I had the opportunity to attend another class with Kathy, I definitely would.
Linda was also there. You should check out her story and pics.
